AISI 310S, or UNS S31008, is austenitic stainless steel that contains 25% Cr, 0.6% Si, and 20% Ni. This alloy is well-known for its excellent resistance to general corrosion in high-temperature atmospheres. It can be easily welded and is ideal for high-temperature environments up to 1100°C in oxidizing atmospheres. It is also suitable for nitriding, oxidizing atmospheres, sulfuring, cementing, and thermal cycling conditions.
The stainless steel 310S round bar comprises chromium, nickel, silicon and iron. Chromium is the most vital alloying element, and 19-22% forms the stainless steel 310S round bar. Nickel ranges from 22-24%, whilst silicon content is between 0.5-1.5%. Iron makes up the balance of the stainless steel 310S round bar composition and shows good corrosion resistance. The introduction of carbon in the stainless steel 310S round bar makes it possible to roll out thinner sections without compromising strength. It is much more cost-effective than other 300-grade stainless steel on the market.
The difference between 310 and 310S stainless steel bars is mainly in the carbon content; they both belong to the 300 series of stainless steel. The “310” refers to the chromium-nickel alloy component of the material, with a higher amount of chromium and an allowance for slightly higher levels of carbon. On the other hand, the “310S” has an increased sulfur level for improved machinability. Both grades offer good corrosion resistance, weldability, exceptional formability and thermal conductivity, but 310 tends to be more cost-effective as it does not require annealing after welding.
